A historic neighborhood

Socoa reflects important chapters of French history. From ancient times to the 19th century, it has undergone important transformations.

The fort and the port

In the Middle Ages, Socoa was a fishing port where whaling boats were placed. A few centuries later, and more precisely in 1617, the construction of the port began. Nowadays, it is home to small boats, used for fishing and recreation, as well as “battelekus“, colorful traditional boats.

There is also another historical place: the fort. Its construction dates from 1627, at the time of Louis XIII. It will be later transformed into military place under the reign of the Sun King. You can admire this symbol on the adjacent beach since it is currently closed.

The Napoleonic dykes

Socoa is rich in history. It is a witness of great events that have marked the Basque region. At the time of Napoleon III, 3 dykes were built, one of which was in Socoa, to protect the bay against the onslaught of the ocean. At low tide, you can enjoy a pleasant walk on the Socoa dike to admire Ciboure and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, with the Pyrenees chain in the background.

The anchoring of the blocks: a bicentennial ritual

After the colossal construction site which allowed the construction of the dikes, the anchoring of the blocks takes place annually. We immerse 30 concrete blocks around the dikes of Socoa, Artha and Sainte Barbe. These protection blocks are manufactured in workshops in Socoa. You can discover them on the banks of the river Untxin.

A vibrant neighborhood

In Socoa, economic enterprises and tourist attractions thrive harmoniously to offer an authentic experience to visitors. Whether you are looking for a quiet getaway, a gourmet curious about the region’s gastronomy, or a water sports enthusiast, the Socoa area has so much to offer. Several diving, sailing and surfing schools offer activities for beginners as well as for the experienced.

On your way to the fort, don’t hesitate to discover the many restaurants. The local culinary specialties will delight your taste buds. You will be touched by the warm welcome of the inhabitants. Also, a walk along the Untxin river is a must. You will walk around the river along a path designed for walkers. On the left bank, you may have the opportunity to attend the monthly street fair that takes place every first Sunday of the month.
That’s not all, if you visit Socoa in summer, you can discover the famous pala tournament which takes place from June to August. This event, which brings together the best local players, takes place at the Socoa fronton.
